Maps & Routes

100 km route

Starting at the Park in Hveragerði by the schoolhouse. Run up the gulch along Varmá-river past the guesthouse Frosti og Funi, up the hill and cross the road towards the Hamar. Run the walking path south of Hamar and up on the lava brink, to the old Kambar-road below Hrauntunga (summerhouses). Run the old road to a riding path going north over the Hamar, along the road and into the valley until you reach a walking path leading to a parking lot by Varmá-river innermost in the valley.

There you take a marked route up the Rjúpnabrekkur to Reykjadalur. Go up the Klambri gulch (Klambragil) from Reykjadalur by the hot stream and to Ölkelduháls until you reach a road marker (drinking station) showing the direction to Sleggjubeinsskarð on a bluemarked route. Run this route through Fremstidalur, Miðdalur, Þrengsli and Innstidalur. Just after Þrengsli you have to turn left from the path and over the stream and to the road going into the valley and from it you go down to Sleggjubeinsskarð, where there will be a drinking station and a toilet. Run the same route back up to the Sleggjubeinsskarð and then turn left on to a blackmarked route on the crest between Innstidalur and Húsmúli. Run this crest all the way up to Vörðu-Skeggi, which is the highest point on the Hengill-area. Enjoy the lovely view from Skeggi over the mountains around Þingvellir.

From Skeggi you go the same route down but shortly after you come down you continue on a marked route going south over the Hengill moors. Soon you reach a road marker pointing towards Innstidalur and follow it down until you reach a cabin innermost in the valley. Run the same route back to the marker at Ölkelduháls and now you go down to Reykjadalur north of Ölkelduhnjúkur. Run the Reykjadalur down to Hveragerði, along the Hamar through the gulch to the Park, over the starting line, turn around and take the second loop on the same route.
